Main reason why the dog snore

Do you share your bed with your dog? If so, you’re not alone. It’s said that one third of pet owners have let their pets sleep with them. Unlike cats, dogs have a very similar sleep pattern to humans.

However, some dogs can disrupt their human’s sleep with, yes, you guessed it – snoring! Many dogs – and cats for that matter – can suffer from snoring. It’s not just something that affects people.

But why does my dog snore?

Just like people, a dog’s snoring can be caused by a variety of reasons. Usually it’s from a collapse of certain areas of the throat, which creates an obstructed air passage in the windpipe. It’s pretty much the same in humans.

Reasons that this happens to dogs include:
- The dog is overweight and excess flesh or heavy skin weighs down the air passage
- The dog has a pushed-in face which narrows their air passage
- The dog has allergies or a cold which swells the air passage

What should I do about my dog’s snoring?

Be sure, before you go ahead with any surgery for your pet that you know what is involved. Although surgery can provide your dog with great relief, it can also come with risks and consequences. Do research online and make a list of questions for you and your vet to go over before agreeing to the surgery.First and foremost, if your dog’s snoring is really disruptive, take him to the vet. The snoring could be a symptom of something more serious. You might want to video record your dog’s snoring beforehand on your smart phone – or camera. That way the vet can see your pooch in action. Your vet will let you know what is causing your dog’s snoring, and suggest a recommended course of action, be it more exercise, a new pet bed, or perhaps even surgery.

Increasing your pet’s exercise regime and watching their diet carefully (no table scraps!!) will help reduce their Rubenesque waistlines, which in turn may help calm or stop the snoring. And hey! Getting more exercise WITH your dog is even better. You’ll both be in shape and feeling great!
